Industrial storage is selected on endurance and revision control rather than on capacity and price. The write workload and the operating temperature usually decide the part.

01Form factor and capacity

  • Form factor: 2.5in, M.2, mSATA, CFast, SD, eMMC, BGA, DIMM or SODIMM
  • Interface: SATA, NVMe, PCIe generation and lane count, or UHS class
  • Capacity required now, and the headroom to plan for
  • Host platform, chipset and operating system

02Endurance and reliability

  • NAND type: SLC, pSLC, MLC or TLC
  • Daily write volume and expected service life, expressed as TBW or DWPD
  • Power-loss protection requirement
  • Wear levelling, over-provisioning and health reporting (S.M.A.R.T.)
  • Data retention required at the operating temperature

  • Operating and storage temperature range (commercial or industrial)
  • Shock, vibration and conformal coating needs
  • Fixed bill of materials and revision control
