Cleanroom Recovery Time Measurement

A controlled particle challenge is introduced and the concentration decay is measured, characterising how quickly the room returns toward its specified condition. The acceptance criterion is set by the room requirement or the project specification, not by the measurement itself.

Recovery Performance Scope

Classification tells you the concentration at a moment. Recovery tells you what happens after something disturbs it — a process event, a door opening, an intervention. It is a measurement of the ventilation system's ability to clear a disturbance, not of the air's steady-state cleanliness.

Applicability of Recovery Testing

Recovery testing is applied where the airflow concept and the applicable method make it meaningful. It is principally relevant to non-unidirectional, turbulently ventilated environments, where air is diluted and displaced over time rather than swept continuously in one direction.

In a fully unidirectional zone the concept behaves differently, and the applicable method may call for a different test entirely. Whether recovery is required, and against which criterion, follows the governing specification.

Result Applicability and Test Conditions

A recovery result is a property of the specific room, its ventilation system, the challenge used and the measurement position. It does not transfer between rooms, and a figure obtained in one facility says nothing about another.

Measurement Controls Across the Recovery Sequence

  • Initial stateA stable, documented starting concentration — otherwise the decay has no baseline to be measured against.

Particle-Counter Sampling and Time Resolution

A recovery test is a time series, not a single sample. The particle counter has to support repeat or continuous measurement with a sample interval short enough to capture the shape of the decay, and enough stored records to hold the whole run.

The upper end matters too: the counter must still be within its working concentration range immediately after the challenge, or the early part of the curve is unusable.
